Structural characterisation and homoepitaxial growth on Cu(111)
نویسنده
چکیده
A comprehensive study of the homoepitaxial MBE growth of Cu on Cu(111) is presented. This system displays a wealth of features and a large accumulation of morphological and structural defects. It is demonstrated that all of them can be ascribed to two basic characteristics of fcc-(111) faces: the presence of two threefold adsorption sites at the surface, which allows the formation of stacking faults, and the existence of high Ehrlich–Schwoebel barriers at steps, hindering interlayer diffusion. This behaviour, therefore, must be common during growth on compact metallic faces, and could have important implications for the preparation of low-dimensional heterostructures. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Diffusion and submonolayer island growth during hyperthermal deposition on Cu(100) and Cu(111)
We consider the influence of realistic island diffusion rates to homoepitaxial growth on metallic surfaces using a recently developed rate equation model which describes growth in the submonolayer regime with hyperthermal deposition. To this end, we incorporate realistic size and temperature-dependent island diffusion coefficients for the case of homoepitaxial growth on Cu(100) and Cu(111) surf...
متن کاملManipulation of growth modes in heteroepitaxy: Ni/Cu(111)
Growth manipulation methods, which have been successfully used to improve the growth of homoepitaxial films, are applied to molecular beam epitaxy of the heteroepitaxial system Ni/Cu~111!. The procedures applied are temperature reduction during nucleation and pulsed ion bombardment during deposition. While the first does not lead to smoother films, the ion beam assisted growth is successful in ...
متن کاملMesoscopic relaxation in homoepitaxial metal growth.
We demonstrate that a size-dependent mesoscopic mismatch exists in homoepitaxy, which has a strong impact on the morphology of the islands and the substrate. Atomic scale calculations for double layer Cu islands on Cu(111) reveal that mesoscopic strain relaxations in both islands and the substrate strongly influence the shape of islands and can effect the details of atomic motion near the island.
متن کاملScanning Tunneling Microscopy Studies of Cluster Diffusion in a Highly Mismatched System: Copper on Silver(111)
I have used low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate cluster diffusion phenomena in both the early stages of nucleation and growth and the late stages for a highly mismatched system, Cu on Ag(111). In particular, activation energies and prefactors for cluster diffusion are measured directly by tracking cluster motion with atomic precision at multiple temperatures to determin...
متن کاملPreferential nucleation and high mobility of linear Cu trimers on Ag(111)
Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we studied the formation of dimers, trimers, and other clusters of Cu on Ag(111) at low temperature. We show that trimers, once formed, have significantly higher mobilities than either atoms or dimers. While transient, this mobility makes linear trimers a major contributor to mass transport. Using the scanning tunneling microscopy tip, we constructed linear ...
